Business Studies Curriculum
Subject aim
The aim of the Business Studies curriculum is to equip students with the powerful business knowledge and the appropriate skills needed to develop their employability and identify business problems and opportunities. We do this by quality first teaching which ensures students understand underlying Business theory which they can then apply to a variety of familiar and unfamiliar case studies. We want students to be able to think analytically, reach logical conclusions based on data, and make judgements on future changes to markets and the economy, and also understand how bigger business issues impact on their daily lives.
Details about curriculum structure
In Key Stage 4, students can opt for our BTEC Level 2 Tech Award in Enterprise. The BTEC Level 2 Tech Award in Enterprise has been designed to provide a focused vocational qualification. The qualification will provide students with the knowledge, understanding and competencies necessary to prepare them for employment or higher education. The course has an essential core of knowledge and applied competencies. The essential core gives learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of a vocational sector.
In Key Stage 5 our students study the BTEC National Extended Certificate in Business. The aims of the qualifications are to provide them with a wide range of knowledge and competencies which can be applied to real life contexts, and prepares them for continual higher-level study, apprenticeships and employment. There is a clear progression for students who have previously studied Enterprise, but it also provides new opportunities, and is accessible for those who are new to the subject.
What will students study?
Key Stage 4
Year 10
Students begin by developing an understanding of the role and functions of Small & Medium Enterprises in the Local Area. Students research specific local businesses, identify and explore local and national factors that affect their success. Students also begin preparation for a written finance exam at the end of the year, based around knowledge gained on various financial and promotional concepts.
Year 11
Students continue their study at Level 2 with the challenge of developing and pitching their own micro business ideas. This provides students with the opportunity to apply the skills developed across Year 10 to their own ideas.
Key Stage 5
Year 12
In Year 12 students begin by exploring different types of business, building on the knowledge gained at Level 2 whilst also being accessible for students new to the subject. They look at different types of business ownership and models. Students also study a unit looking at marketing, and work towards developing their own marketing campaign for an idea released by the exam board.
Year 13
Students study a unit on Personal and Business finance, acquiring knowledge of how managing money in both areas is crucial to business and personal success. Students also complete a unit on recruitment, this is chosen as it is a prominent focus within business no matter the size or scale.
Qualifications which we offer at KS4 and KS5
Enrichment and extracurricular opportunities in the subject
Students can take part in the Enterprise Club, which encourages students to develop their entrepreneurial skills outside of the classroom. Over the last two years the groups have been highly successful, working with local charities, in particular the local food banks. As well as this they run events in school to raise money for a variety of causes.
Where could this subject ultimately take you?
Business can lead to many different career and educational paths. Apprenticeships and higher-level study are a natural stepping stone, with a focus on Business itself. However, the competencies developed by the subject such as analysis, critical thinking, creativity and evaluation, are crucial in a variety of subject areas such as Accountancy, Law, The Civil Service, and many areas of business management.
