Pupil Premium

The Pupil Premium is a coalition government initiative designed to target resources on those pupils deemed to be from a disadvantaged background.

Specifically, the Pupil Premium money is provided for those pupils who have been on Free School Meals (FSM) at any point over the past 6 years (Ever6), Pupil Premium funding will also be allocated in respect of children of families with No Recourse to Public Funding (NRPF) who are eligible for Free School Meals and whom have made successful claims to ESFA.  Or those children who are looked after (CLA), this is catagorised as where children have been looked after for at least one day. Allocation will also be awarded for Previously Looked after Children (PCLA), where students have been looked after by the local authority before being adopted of those children who have left the local authority care on a special guardianship order.

For the academic year 2023/2024 the Pupil Premium has a value of £985 per eligible pupil. Schools receive an additional £1425 for each pupil who has been looked after for 1 day or more, has been adopted from care, or has left care under a special guardianship order, a residence order or a child arrangement order.  There is also a smaller provision of £320 made for those pupils who have a parent in the armed services. Neither the government nor any government agencies have dictated how the Pupil Premium money should be spent, but what is clear is that the money should be used to promote strategies, which diminish the progress and attainment differences between disadvantaged pupils and non-disadvantaged pupils nationally.

Parents: If your child has been adopted from care and was aged 4 to 15 on 31 August 2020, and was in local authority care for more than 1 day please let us know.  The information will be treated in strictest confidence but will enable us to provide more for your child. If you feel that your child is eligible for the Pupil Premium but don’t currently claim for Free School Meals,  use the link below to access the application process.

How do we spend Pupil Premium funding?

At Temple Moor, any disadvantaged pupil will be given a wealth of support and it is school policy that teaching staff, non-teaching staff and governors support pupils eligible for the Pupil Premium and utilise first quality teaching to support students and ensure that we are supporting students to close gaps that arise or are evident within subjects.

We are also fully dedicated to committing our resources to interventions and strategies that have proven evidence-based outcomes. Central to this, is making sure that Teaching and Learning is of a consistently high quality and underpins all that we do. Many of our interventions at both pastoral and academic level are directly focused on disadvantaged pupils, but ultimately some will benefit other pupils across the school. Additionally, we spend significantly more than the money we are allocated each year. For a full breakdown of the strategies and interventions, impact analysis, please see our Pupil Premium Strategy.

Barriers to Learning

A number of our disadvantaged pupils face significant barriers to their learning which are wide varied and complex. As such, there is no single solution to change this, requiring careful thought on a personalised basis. A high proportion of our disadvantaged pupils are from families in which there is built in social deprivation which can manifest itself in creating issues such as having low or sporadic attendance, social, emotional and behaviour difficulties and a lack of parental engagement in their school life. Equally, other pupils who are eligible for disadvantaged funding can be extremely able, but do not always have the self-confidence and belief to challenge themselves and strive for excellence, such as applying for a place at a high-quality university or a higher-level apprenticeship. Therefore, our strategy is designed to encompass the wide range of need of our students.

At Temple Moor we fully believe in the individual and supporting them to reach their potential. As such, the way in which the school spends the disadvantaged funding has to be constantly monitored to ensure it foremost meets the needs of its pupils.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Over the next 12 months, all of the strategies and interventions will be thoroughly audited, evaluated and decisions made on their viability. Our monitoring and evaluation is an ongoing process with specific actions reviewed after a few weeks, whilst others may be after three months. This has a central aim of continuing to spend our Pupil Premium allocation for the year 2023/2024 on the interventions that have the most impact. The PP strategy is based on a 3-year plan, but we must actively evaluate this throughout and respond to the needs of pupils and new research that may impact pupils who are in receipt of Pupil Premium funding. This gives us the option to trial new innovations and explore how we can further assist our most disadvantaged pupils with a wide range of academic and pastoral strategies. Our monitoring practices include; the assessment and analysis of data, looking carefully at the quality of pupils’ work and in their books and listening to pupil voice to clearly identify what works well for them.
