Consultation on enlarging the Sixth Form at Temple High School & Sixth Form
Temple Moor High School is proposing an expansion to our successful sixth form provision, from September 2024, taking our total numbers from 220 to 350 by 2027. The school has applied for funding to the Government’s Post 16 Capacity Fund, to facilitate this expansion.
As part of this proposal, we are opening a public consultation on this which will run from 14 December 2022 until 9am on Wednesday, 25 January 2023.
What is being proposed?
Population growth within Leeds is forecast by the Office for National Statistics to be in the top 10% of areas nationally, over the next 8 years. East Leeds, in particular, will see sizeable population growth as a result of the developments at Thorpe Park and proposed housing developments within the East Leeds Orbital Route. This growth has already been reflected within the larger admissions numbers taken in at Y7 over recent years, which is now working through the school and will increase the 16-18 demographic in the coming years. This growth is also being seen within other local secondary schools.
We are proposing to increase our annual sixth form capacity from 110 to 175. This proposed expansion would include the redevelopment of the existing sixth form block with an extension to accommodate an additional 3 classrooms, a servery, an enlarged common room and a study space. In addition, some non-teaching spaces within the existing school building would be repurposed into a further 3 classrooms.
Why is this being proposed?
This space is necessary as it will enable us to meet the needs of students in the local area, both from Temple Moor but also other schools, in providing a high quality, broad and balanced curriculum offer which caters for their range of ambitions, including both academic and vocational courses. It will provide students with high quality facilities in which to benefit from our already high-quality curriculum, teaching and pastoral care.
Without the additional teaching spaces, the sixth form may be forced to change its entry criteria, or reject suitably qualified prospective students for whom Temple Moor may be their first-choice institution. Additionally, smaller courses may be unable to run reducing student choice. This proposal therefore safeguards provision and choice for students across the East of the city.
